Attila (1970) ... Billy Joel

"...sounds like a fucked up baseball game"

Joel himself has gone on record as describing the album as "psychedelic bullshit"

"I was in a two-man group. We were heavy metal, we were going to destroy the world with amplification, we had titles like 'Godzilla', 'March of the Huns', 'Brain Invasion'. A lot of people think [I] just came out of the piano bar... I did a lot of heavy metal for a while. We had about a dozen gigs and nobody could stay in the room when we were playing. It was too loud. We drove people literally out of clubs."
—Billy Joel, Interview with Billy Joel by Dan Neer in 1985

Q: Is it true that after the failure of [your heavy metal band] Attila you tried to kill yourself by drinking a bottle of furniture polish?
A: That’s true. Yeah, I was suicidal. I was 21. It’s a tough age. Things hit you really hard. A relationship with a girl had ended and I was devastated, and then it didn’t work out with the recording we did, and I just figured the world didn’t need another failed musician. You take yourself so seriously—you’ve got your head so far up your ass you can’t see straight.

Q: But why did you use furniture polish?
A: I was just lookin’ for poison. I looked in my mother’s closet and there was bleach, and it had the skull and crossbones, and then there was furniture polish. And at the time I thought, Well, the furniture polish will probably taste better than the bleach, so I’ll drink the furniture polish. And all I ended up doing was farting furniture polish for a couple of days and polishing my mother’s chairs.

Heavy Metal Gangs of Wadeye

The Judas Priest Boys, the Slayer Mob and the Metallica Gang.

Gang violence has turned the remote Aboriginal community of Wadeye, Australia into a war zone

"Scores of Aborigines have fled their homes and are living in squalid refugee-like camps as two rival gangs, the Evil Warriors and the Judas Priests, fight for control of the Northern Territory's largest black town.

Even the gang leaders have voiced concern. "Somebody's going to die," said Gregory Narndu, 32, a leader of the Evil Warriors. "What can we do? That other mob attacks us with rocks, boulders, spears and anything else they can get hold of."

The rioters have caused more than $450,000 worth of damage to houses and other property."

BUT IS IT METAL?!? Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music (1975)

...BUT IS IT METAL?!?

"Reed himself has said of the album "I was serious about it. I was also really, really stoned." In the album's liner notes he claimed to have invented heavy metal music and asserted that Metal Machine Music was the ultimate conclusion of that genre."

Bite the Bat Head and Rip it Off!

"I GOT RABIES SHOTS FOR BITING THE HEAD OFF A BAT, BUT THAT'S OKAY... THE BAT HAD TO GET OZZY SHOTS."

"I was standing in the second row while Ozzy was prancing from one side of the stage to the other, clapping his hands above his head to the beat of the music, trying to get the audience to join in and do the same, while the bat was hanging out of his mouth. Ozzy passed in front of me and noticed that I was the only one NOT complying to his request to clap with my hands above my head. He stopped in front of me, removed the bat from his mouth, pointed directly at me and said, 'Clap your f***ing hands or I will curse you!' I smiled, and Ozzy threw the bat at me. The bat hit me square in the chest, though at that particular moment, I did not know that it was a bat. I caught it as it bounced off my chest. It was slimy and the ribs of the wings jabbed at my fingers. I dropped the sticky, spiny thing into my coat pocket and proceeded to enjoy the rest of the show."

"After signing his first solo career record deal he came in to meet some of the people who worked at the record company. His plan was to release doves into the air as a sign of peace; instead,he grabbed a dove, bit its head off, then spat the head out. Then, with blood still dripping from his lips, a security guard came to remove him. Despite its controversy, this act has been parodied and alluded to several times throughout his career and is part of what made Ozzy Osbourne famous. He gained further notoriety on 20 January 1982, when he bit the head off a bat he thought was rubber while performing at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa."

Air Guitar Vs. Cardboard Guitar

Who would win in a battle between the purist Air guitarists, or the more earthy Cardboard guitarists? The answer is: We all win!

Talk about documentation...
"A cardboard guitar, used for air guitar purposes. Robin Yeatman was the first to ever make and "play" a hardboard guitar in the late 70's, inside the Heavy Metal club "The Soundhouse" in London. The guitar's are fashioned to look like a lead guitarist's instrument."
